Learning to Be With the Littles, Least, Lost, and Lonely
Learning to Be With the Littles, Least, Lost, and Lonely
One of the Practices That Helps Us Center Jesus
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus makes space for those the world tends to ignore: Children (Matthew 19), the poor and hungry (Matthew 25), the outsider (Luke 15), and the stranger (also Matthew 25).
We are still learning what it means to be with people the way Jesus is with us—
without control, without hurry, without needing to be impressive or right.
Being with is not a technique.
It’s a posture.
A quiet practice of presence, trust, and deep attention.
We’re learning to be with the littles, the least, the lost, and the lonely—
not because we have the answers,
but because Jesus said that’s where he is.
“When you welcome the child, you welcome me.”
“When you care for the least, you care for me.”
“Wouldn’t I go after the one who’s missing?”
This isn’t a performance. It’s not a project.
It’s a slow, holy way of walking with the world.
We show up, not to fix what’s broken but to witness it.
We stay, not because it’s easy but because it’s faithful.
And we listen—not only to the needs of others, but for the presence of Christ among them.
This is one of the ways we center Jesus.
We move toward the people and places he already inhabits.
And we pay attention—
to the other,
to the pain,
to the beauty,
and to God.
